Bold Tendencies, London, England, 2017

ISBN 0995663904

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 210 pages. Commemorative Installation Monograph. One of Adel Abdessemed's single most beautiful creations. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Adel Abdessemed: Regular-sized volume format. Gilt softcovers with blue titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Sculpture, black-chalk drawings, and photographs by Adel Abdessemed. Text by Hannah Barry, Donatien Grau, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, the single most influential curator of contemporary art in the world. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in London to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the installation of the eponymous piece by Bold Tendencies in Central Peckham, South London in 2017. Presents Adel Abdessemed's "Bristow". The artist's stunning "anti-monument": A carrier pigeon with a Blackberry and explosives on its back, seemingly innocuously nicknamed after a British cartoon. "Unveiled on the top floor of the multi-story car park in Central Peckham, South London, the permanent piece, commissioned by the non-profit organization Bold Tendencies, is entitled after the long-running cartoon in the London newspaper, The Evening Standard, which depicted the everyday activities of a humdrum, maverick buying clerk who works in the Chester-Perry Building. A quiet but powerful work: A life-size steel sculpture of a London pigeon with explosives and a BlackBerry strapped to its back. Packs a punchy message about our lack of faith in our neighbors, and typical of Abdessemed's work, the piece is made beautiful by its understated violence" (Publisher's blurb). "Abdessemed's work always appears to be in a state of high alert" (Venice Biennale). "For me, the artistic act is like the old mole that sticks its nose out where nobody expects" (Adel Abdessemed). Apart from the artist's original black-chalk drawings that are reproduced in the book, "Bristow" extends its beguiling presence in evocative color photographs that depict the sculpture amidst its surroundings, that is to say, in its wider context. The photographs are like souvenir postcards, beautifully reproduced in a volume whose production values recall the artist's "L'Age D'Or". An absolute "must-have" title for Adel Abdessemed collectors. This copy is very boldly, beautifully, and vertically signed in black chalk on the half-title page by Adel Abdessemed. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Abdessemed then drew a full-page rendition of "Bristow" beside his signature. The latter is truly an original artwork, in line with the "Bristow" drawing-reproductions in the book. This title is a contemporary art classic. As far as we know, this is one of only two such signed copies (with original drawing) of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Abdessemed drew "Bristow" differently in each case. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0995663904.
