The African Association was founded in June 1788 'for the purpose of promoting the discovery of the inland districts of Africa.' This volume published in 1791 records the Plan of the Association and its first activities including the explorations of Lucas and Ledyard. The African Association later was amalgamated with the Royal Geographical Society. William Wilberforce and Sir Joseph Banks were among the founding members.
