Robert & Lowes Dickinson published ‘The Caffre Tribes: Sketches of some of the various classes and tribes inhabiting the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope and the Interior of Southern Africa, with a brief account Descriptive of the Manners and Customs of Each’. The 41 plates were by ‘J. W.’, Dickinson states that ‘J. W.’, the artist, was a talented gentleman many years resident at the Cape. Research by A Gordon-Brown suggests that the identity of ‘J. W.’ was J. White - see Africana Notes and News - Vol 20 P17-19. ‘J. W.’ and also A. Gordon-Brown - Pictorial Africana, 1975 ‘J.W.’ in any event was a Cape Civil servant who made these sketches/watercolours and sold them to visitors to the Cape in the 1840’s. His watercolours, unacknowledged, were used in several publications in the mid 1800’s. Click here for full details of this book, to ask a question or to buy it on-line.
