Aveline : Original Double Print - "Veue et Perspective de la Samaritaine de Paris"; "Veue du Profil de Douay, Ville Forte du Comte de Flandre, Scituee sur la Riviere de l'Escarpe ..."

Chez Crepy, Paris, France

Original double print that has two sides of beautiful, hand-colored copperplate engravings. No date, both circa 1740-1770. Paper of both prints measures 14 1/2" x 9 1/4" (sides adhered to one another); printed area of La Samaritaine print measures 12 1/4" x 8"; printed area of Profil de Douay print measures 12" x 7 3/4." One of the prints shows a view of the River Seine, Pont Neuf (on which people are walking, riding horse-drawn carriages, or shopping at vendors), and La Samaritaine. La Samaritaine was a two-story hydraulic pump on Pont Neuf that was completed in 1608 under the reign of King Henry IV to supply water to the Louvre Palace and gardens and operated until 1813. Today, the famous La Samaritaine department store (named after the pump) stands near the pump's original location. The other print shows a battle scene near Douay (Douai), Flanders, which is shown in the background. These prints are "vue d'optiques," which were very popular in the latter half of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth century. Vue d'optique prints emphasized perspective in their compositions and produced an illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope. Below the printed areas of both artworks are the titles and author and publisher information in French. Pierre Aveline (1656-1722) and his two sons, Antoine (1691-1743) and Pierre-Alexandre (1702-1760), were French printers and engravers. Jean Baptiste Crepy (1660?-1739) and his two sons, Etienne-Louis (1700?-1759) and Jean-Baptiste (also known as Crepy le Jeune; 17??-1796), were French printers and publishers. Jean established his print shop in 1690, which was later run by Etienne, then Jean-Baptiste, and finally closed in 1790. Both prints are very clean and intact with vibrant colors. A few pin or thumbtack holes in two of the margin corners. Very minimal foxing and age-toning.. Print. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
