The Twelfth Man,in cricketing parlance,is the player who acts as a fielding substitute when a member of his side is ill or injured;more important, perhaps,it is the Twelfth Man who brings out the trays of drinks to sustain players wilting in the hot sun of an Australian, West Indian,South African,New Zealand,or even an English summer's afternoon. The Twelfth Man of the Lord's Taverners, that remarkable Commonwealth-wide organisation of "good fellows" from the worlds of sport and the arts, dedicated to the task of raising money for charity, has made for himself a very special place in the Commonwealth - and indeed the World - side. The sustenance he has given wilting players over the years has varied considerably in its content; sometimes it has soothed, sometimes it has inspired, sometimes it has been in the shape of a hearty kick on the backside, but never has it been placed with less than painstaking accuracy. On 10 June 1971,the Twelfth Man,HRH the Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh, reaches his half century, his fiftieth birthday. There will be much made in celebration, but it is doubtful if any present will give him greater pleasure than this book, a gift given to him as a mark of loyalty and devotion by his fellow Lord's Taverners. Their happy idea was to ask the writers, artists, sportsmen and show business personalties listed on the back of the dw/dj to give an original piece of work of their own choice as a birthday present to Prince Philip. These have been combined by a founder-member of the Lord's Taverners,Martin Boddey,in a book printed and specially bound for presentation to HRH.Further to celebrate the occasion,an edition of the book for the general public has been printed from the same type, and the royalties from its sale will be put to a fund to be administered by Prince Philip. The Twelfth Man is that book,an incomparable anthology and permanent bedside book of essays, stories, paintings and drawings by an incomparable list of contributors, who could only have been brought together in such a good cause. No happier way of presenting one's own good wishes to HRH on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday could be made than by purchasing a copy of this book and thereby contributing to a cause which is dear to his own heart and interests. The Lord's Taverners, since their foundation in 1950 by a small group of actors and their friends in the world of art and entertainment, have raised a fund of £200,000 (then 1971).The fund is administered by The National Playing Fields Association for the provision of cricket pitches and playing facilities of all kinds for boys' clubs, village teams and such-like who might otherwise be denied the means of playing the noble game.Their beneficiaries now number well over 1,500 clubs and youth organisations throughout the country,(again, then 1971) and special grants have been made to help representative schoolboy teams to tour in the Commonwealth.See below, for complete list of contributors: Annigoni (Mini-car designer), John Arlott, Douglas Bader, Roger Bannister, Raymond Baxter, Nicholas Bentley, Patrick Beresford, John Betjeman, Basil Boothroyd, Jack Broome, Patrick Campbell, Neville Cardus, Dennis Castle, John Chamier, Daphne du Maurier, Gerald Durrell, Hugh Falkus, James Fisher, Clement Freud, Paul Gallico, GILES, GILROY, Robert Gittings, James Gleeson, Seton Gordon, C.Gordon Glover, Nathaniel Gubbins and HARGREAVES (cartoonist).
