A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on July 29, 1848 by Franklin Welsh Bowdon (1817-1857), an American lawyer and politician. He was a Southern Democrat and served as a U.S. Representative from Alabama from 1846-1851. In this brief document, Bowdon pointedly addresses many relevant topics pertaining to the recent Mexican-American War and the question of free and slave states. He names many of his political contemporaries including President James K. Polk, Martin van Buren, and Millard Fillmore. Bowdon appears to be generally opposed to the admittance of free states and states his opposition to the Free Soil Party and Whigs. He was also supportive of the U.S.'s annexation of Texas from Mexico and opposed the Wilmot Proviso which would have banned slavery in territories acquired from Mexico.
