Original publisher's hand-colored engraved map of Spain and Portugal. Part of France and the Bay of Biscay are shown to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east and south, and the Bay of Cadiz and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. A beautiful map that features green, pink, yellow, orange, and blue watercoloring. Major cities are shown along with natural geographic features such as rivers and mountains. Map with margins measures 12 3/4" x 8 7/8"; actual map area measures 11 1/2" x 7 1/4." Map is very clean and intact overall. Slight wrinkling on the right edge (only affects margin) and a very small part of the bottom-right edge appears to be torn off (limited to margin). Title printed in lower-right corner. Scale of distance in British Statute Miles printed in lower-left corner. Lines of latitude and longitude also included. The following is printed at the top over the neatline: "Engraved for Middleton's Complete System of Geography." This map was engraved by Thomas Bowen (?-1790), an English cartographer. Thomas was the son of Emanuel Bowen (1694?-1767), an English cartographer and geographer who worked for George II of England and Louis XV of France. As noted on the map, this particular map of Spain and Portugal was printed for Charles Theodore Middleton's Complete System of Geography, which was an atlas that included Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas..
