Bree, Charles Robert : A History of the Birds of Europe Not Observed in the British Isles - Five Volumes

George Bell and Sons, Covent Garden, London, 1875

Five volumes - complete set. All 150 coloured plates complete. Rebound in quarter leather. A most appealing set. Burgundy boards with gilt titling and decoration. The boards are venerable and genteel. The gilt on all volumes is bright and genial. The plates are hand-coloured. These are most pleasing and viscerally elegant. The colours are fresh and gentle. Volume 1: the leathered corners and spine are handsome and fresh. The page edges are tanned. There are flecks of foxing here and there. Volume II: the board edges have some storage wear. The pages are mild, comfortable and genial. Volume III: the board edges are battered but the overall aspect of the covers is benign. The page edges are tanned. The pages are placid and diligent. Volume IV: the boards have some light shelving wear. The contents are contented and neat. Volume V: The boards have some storage and shelving scuffing and wear. The leathering is smart. The contents have occasional foxing freckles. Oh! Happy set! This is clubbable, gentlemanly and a perfect example of Victorian amateur enthusiasm and excellence. A wonderful set of books with much information, entertainment, learning, pleasure. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
