Some may feel that disguising a well-armed ship as a harmless merchantman is not exactly fair play; others could counter that if both sides are employing such 'ruses de guerre' then that makes it all right.' Though by its very nature this was an earnest and lethal game,it seems to have been played with a remarkable degree of good humour and chivalry by both sides. Some of the incidents which Tony Bridgland so vividly describes have the elements of farce,with heavy emphasis on surprise and disguise.The latter was not confined to the ships themselves but,on occasion, involved the crews using a variety of fancy dress to achieve their aim.
As befits its subject matter,'Sea Killers in Disguise' is a serious work of naval history and tells of remarkable feats of endurance,leadership and daring.
