Briggs, Richard : THE ENGLISH ART OF COOKERY According To The Present Practice

G.G.J. and J. Robinson, London, 1788

8vo. Being A Complete Guide to all Housekeepers, On A Plan Entirely New: Consisting of Thirty-Eight Chapters. iv, xx, 656 pp. 12 engraved plates of Bills of Fare for every month of the year. 194 x 123mm. Ink owners name, 'Elizabeth Leach 1789' to the top of the title-page. Early half-calf binding with good margins but a trifle shortened in length just cropping the very top edge of the signature. A nice tight example of the very scarce first edition in a worn but intact early period binding. All the 12 plates are present. The first plate, January, has been neatly repaired around the margins but all images are complete. The title-page and contents pages are affected by a damp stain which fades by the first page of the text but is discernable in the first plates and contents section. The text is largely clean and unmarked. A nice copy of a scarce book. The first edition is particularly scarce with copies rarely appearing at auction. Richard Briggs was 'for many years cook at the Globe Tavern, Fleet Street, the White Hart Tavern, Holborn, and now at the Temple Coffee House'.. Book Condition: V.g.. Binding: hardcover
