In this letter Britton undertakes to correct an error about Thurston ...."I am thankful, however that so many faculties are so good, as they are, in my 83rd year...". THOMPSON, JOHN (1785-1866), wood-engraver, son of Richard Thompson, a London merchant, was born at Manchester on 25 May 1785. He learned his art from Allen Robert Branston and became the most distinguished wood-engraver of his time. Thompson engraved the illustrations for Yarrell's great work on British Birds.
