Brooke, Gustavus Vaughan (1818 - 1866) / Shakespeare : Gustavus Vaughan Brooke As Macbeth, Steel Engraving

Martin, Johnson, and Company, 1855

Size 8 x 11 inches, on plate paper, minor toning at edges, minor water staining noted at top and bottom right corners not affecting picture, else clean, sharp, and bright. From Shakespeare's Macbeth. The subject was an Irish Shakespearean actor who first found professional work at age 15 at the Dublin Theatre, 1833. The story of his death is noteworthy. During a voyage from Ireland to Australia on the S. S. London, January, 1866, the ship went down in a storm. Brooke toiled bravely at the pumps of the sinking vessel until all hope was gone, and as the last overcrowded lifeboat pulled away, Brooke was reportedly seen standing, composed, by the companion way calling out to the survivors, "Give my last farewell to the people of Melbourne.".
