A collection of war records, biographies, personal accounts, and reprinted articles and letters commemorating the military service of the Butler family including William Butler (1759-1821) and one of his grandsons, Matthew Calbraith Butler (1836-1909). An example of the Confederate perspective during the Civil War. Much of this book is dedicated to Matthew Butler and his service to the Confederate States Army as a general and cavalryman during the Civil War. Matthew commanded the 2nd South Carolina Cavalry which was formed from Hampton's Legion Cavalry Battalion and the 4th South Carolina Cavalry Battalion. The Butler family had a distinguished lineage in South Carolina and included many politicians who served in that state. William Butler, Sr. was a United States Representative who served as a major general during the War of 1812. He had three sons, William Butler, Jr. (1790-1850), Andrew Pickens Butler (1796-1857), and Pierce Mason Butler (1898-1847), all of whom served as politicians in South Carolina. William, Jr. was Matthew's father. Also included are brief sketches and accounts of other Confederate soldiers and comrades including Phil Hutchinson; Hugh Henderson Scott; Colonel Thomas J. Lipscomb; Kit Goodwyn, an African-American slave; J. D. Hogan; and J. C. Colvin. A sampling of the many other subjects addressed herein are Dumfries Raid; Battle of Brandy Station, Virginia; the capture of Union General Neal Dow; Battle at Trevillian Station; General Sheridan's retreat; Wilson's Raid; Battle of Lee's Mill; Battle of Reams Station; Battle of McDowell's Farm; Warren's Raid; prison accounts by Confederate soldiers; and regimental rolls..
