Original letter typed and signed in black ink on light beige paper. Signed, "Van Wyck Brooks." Letter on The Freeman stationery with the following printed header: "The Freeman, 116 West 13th Street, New York." Dated October 15, 1923. 7" x 7 1/4." One page. Letter is clean and intact overall but has light to moderate age toning, a horizontal fold line, slight wrinkling, faint offsetting at top edge, and two small stains to the right on front not affecting text or signature. A Very Good copy. Van Wyck Brooks (1886-1963) was an American literary critic, historian, biographer, and editor. Brooks became well-known for his series, Makers and Finders (1936-1952) which chronicled the development of American literature in the nineteenth century. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1937 for his The Flower of New England, 1815-1865 (1936). In this brief letter, Van Wyck Brooks writes to Arthur Inman of Boston, Massachusetts. The letter reads, "My dear Mr. Inman, We are very glad to have had the opportunity of examining your manuscript and regret that we are unable to make use of it. Faithfully yours, Van Wyck Brooks, Acting Editor." Brooks's name is printed at top as part of list crediting the six editors of The Freeman.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
