(Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1877)

Demy 8vo; original green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; covers blocked in blind; pp. xvi + 651; some tables. Cloth somewhat mottled and fishmothed, and worn at extremities (cover enclosed in durable, removable protector); library bookplate and ink stamps to front endpaper, some library ink stamps also elsewhere; archival tape strengthening to hinges; sporadic, moderate foxing. (Mendelssohn I, p. 200) 'The work deals with the conditions prevalent in South Africa owing to the aridity of the climate, and more especially with regard to proposed remedies to alter the existing state of affairs. Amongst the measures mentioned are "the erection of dams to prevent the escape of a portion of the rainfall to the sea; the abandonment or restriction of the burning of the Veld; the conservation and extension of existing forests," &c. Statistics and extracts from the works of other authors, and reports from official sources, are accompanied by a large amount of information from every part of South Africa, together with meteorological observations from many stations.' - Mendelssohn. John Croumbie Brown (1808-1895) was a missionary and a botanist, who, in 1862, "was offered the post of Colonial Botanist at the Cape ... In the course of his extensive travels through the country he became familiar with the problems and reached the conclusion that the drying up of the soil, caused by the destruction of veld and flora, lay at the root of the affliction. He set to work with great fervour, condemned veld fires, suggested new grazing methods, and urged that storage dams be built. As time went on he increasingly emphasised the importance of forestry and so violently condemned the burning of indigenous forests that his opponents labelled him a fanatic. ... In his views and his contribution to agriculture, this Presbyterian minister was far in advance of his time, and today is regarded as the pioneer of soil conservation." - DSAB IV, pp. 60-61.
