16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. On offer is a very substantial 40 diary archive lot written by Ray and Rosa Brown. They lived in Eugene, Oregon. 27 of the diaries are written by Rosa. Starting in 1936 to 1963. Great shape, easy to read writing, 24 of them are full. 1943 is half full, and the 1944 and '45 only have one line or two in the whole diary. She explains this in the 1943 diary by saying: "August 13, 1943, I've really tried desperately to be myself, again but....three weeks have gone by & I still can't be interested in anything - It's no use - I give up - so to this diary, I write FINIS." She picks up the pen again to write daily in the 1946 diary. There are 13 small General Electric diaries penned by Ray and sparser and more factual in content. They start in 1923 and run through 1936. These diaries, Rosa's particularly, provide a great read as we follow Rosa and her family from the 30's to the 60's. There is talk of presidents, radio shows (Groucho, the Nelsons, etc.), then their first T.V. set and the shows they watch (Jack Parr, Queen for a Day). They go on trips to Portland, Yahatts, Vancouver, B.C., Corpus Cristi, Cal. and more. They have relatives in WW2 (Ray joins the Home guard), and relatives in Korean war. Has a small passage about Pearl Harbor; "December 7, 1941, Helen called this P.M. told me to turn on the radio- U.S. & Japan at war. Bulletins coming in." Really super comprehensive look at middle American life day by day, through the depression era to John F. Kennedy's assassination as they make mention of all major and minor news events, different cars they bought, how much for groceries, new dams being built and so much more. Also inside the diaries are some newspaper clippings, cigar bands from new baby celebrations, and few cards.. Manuscript.
