Cox remarks that the liveliness of Brydone's description of manners and scenery, being couched in an easy and elegant style, rendered the work extremely popular. However, he adds that the two volumes "do not display much learning or knowledge and are even sometimes superficial†(Cox).
Patrick Brydone was a Scottish traveller who, after attending St. Andrews University, went abroad as a travelling tutor and companion to William Beckford and some other gentlemen. On his return to England from his first tour in the Mediterranean, he published an account of his travels in Sicily and Malta.
