CHARLES COPP : 1917 - 1936 ARCHIVE OF HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTERS BY AN AMERICAN ENGLISH TEACHER IN JAPAN TO THE FOLKS BACK HOME

4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is a very unique archive of correspondence between Charles Copp and his family back home in the USA. Spanning the years 1917 through 1936, Copp apparently was an American living in Japan as an English teacher. The letters are long and full of content about the life of this man in pre-war Japan. Charles has definitely embraced the Japanese culture and his letters are very instructive in culture, manners and his detailed observations of the Japanese. He lived in Hiroshima, Yokoyama, Matsumoto and other cities. There are at least 40 full pages over 17 handwritten and typed letters which easily are woven into a rare manuscript peek of a foreigner in early modern Japan. While the vast majority of the letters are addressed to the 'Homefolk' there is one letter, signed, in response to Charles which is from the American Ambassador to Japan in 1918 speaking of immigration for a Japanese youth to America. VG.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good
