Cleaver, M.M. (editor) : A young South African; a memoir of Ferrar Reginald Mostyn Cleaver; advocate and veldcornet; edited by his mother

(Johannesburg, W.E. Hortor & Co. Ltd., 1913)

Original cloth half-binding, severely insect-damaged, pp. xv + 200 + (1: colophon), frontispiece portrait. Edges uncut, binding slack, light foxing, margins of frontispiece and some preliminary pages stained, a few sections rather roughly opened. Manfred Nathan, in his preface, writes: 'This little book is one of many tokens of a mother's love. It represents a collection of her beloved son's letters made by a lady of more than fourscore years who is, nevertheless, to the joy of all who are privileged to know her, still in possession of all her original vigour of mind and strength of character. But the book is something more. it is the record of some of the experiences of one who, in no mere conventional sense, was a friend, and made a deep and abiding impress upon all with whom he came in contact. His untimely death is mourned by all with whom he had to do, fellow students and colleagues at the Bar, comrades on commando, and Court officials, pressmen, and policemen.' Cleaver was born of English parents in the Orange Free State in 1870. He studied law in England and in 1895 was admitted as an advocate of the South African Republic. He was taken prisoner whilst engaged in the defense of Pretoria against the British, and died in captivity in Ceylon.
