[Colenso (Frances E.) & Durnford (Lieut.-Colonel) Editor] : HISTORY OF THE ZULU WAR, and Its Origin

491 + 24 pages of Chapman & Hall's catalogue dated February 16, 1880, 8vo (228 x 150 mm), large folding coloured map of South Africa with three cellotape repairs, original dark grey cloth gilt, simply recased, corners bumped, water stains in the margins of pages 417 - 422, some pencil annotations, generally a good copy

Colenso and Durnford deal with the background to the War from the Zulu perspective and are severely critical of Frere and his policy towards Cetywayo and the ultimatum which was presented to him. They are also critical of the role and motives of the Natal colonists. There is a full account of the war and the authors are naturally suspicious of Chelmsford and his perceived attempts to shift the blame for Isandlhwana onto Durnford and others.
