[Country Life] : British Trade & Industry. A survey of past achievement and future prospects

(London, Country Life, c. 1942)

Industria y Comercio Británicos. Examen de empresas pretéritas y de futuras perspectivas. 370 x 250 mm; maroon card wraps, gilt; pp. 332; profusely illustrated, incl. full-colour card plates; advertisements. Binding very slack; cover worn, esp. at head and tail of spine; some foxing, largely to card pages, though the text, being largely on art paper, is mostly unaffected; some damp-staining and rippling to top fore-corner of lower cover and final pages. Fair condition. Very uncommon wartime survey of British trade and industry, with parallel English and Spanish text, found in only three WorldCat libraries. There is a colour frontis. illustration, "The Pool of London", especially painted for this publication by Frank H. Mason. H. E. Bates is among the authors of several articles detailing the achievements of Britain in such fields as banking, insurance, science, coal-, iron-, rubber-, wool-, and cotton-production, shipbuilding, aviation, motor-cars, and several other fields. Given that the survey was produced under war economy restrictions, it is an amazingly lavish publication. "British Trade and Industry is a record of creative effort, eagerly initiated and long sustained. It is a reminder of what British enterprise has done to unlock for all the treasurehouse of the earth's bounty. It can need no other justification for appearing now, when the powers of Order and Anarchy, as we see them, are clenched in the bitterest struggle of all time. It tells what has been done - and what will be done again. It can only hint at the varied activities of British manufacturers at this moment, under conditions of total war. That story will be revealed in full one day, and it will amaze the world."
