Binding features in-blind borders, designs, and lettering finished in black and gilt; back cover in-blind (no color added). Beveled extremities. "Presented to" page in front of two frontispieces. Green endpapers (added later??). Condition of binding: Age toned, short tear to top cover joint, age wear to extremities/corners (including one light bump), both hinges cracked. Edges age darken with old damp stains. Interior: Previous owner (or publisher??) added cloth tabs throughout textblock for easy reference, which have deteriorated with offsets to pages. Handwritten to and from inscription dated 1901 on "Presented to" page (book was gift). Scattered damp spots, foxing, offsetting, pencil marks. However, text is clear and readable, most illustrations/engravings are vivid. Else Good condition. This substantially expanded, improved edition was written/rewritten to appeal to families rather than just children and juveniles. Includes introduction to Old Testament, a more complete discussion of the prophecies, the apocrypha, history of the Jews, full description of Palestine, introduction to New Testament, extensive biography of the Apostle John. At the end, there are wonderful Analytical and Chronological Aids for the Study of the Holy Scriptures (a must for educators, religious teachers).
