This copy from the library of Brigadier-General Cyrus Smith, chairman of the Defence Force Publications Committee, and Chief Public Spesman for the Defence Force, with his ownership autograph inside the front board. Tipped in on the front endpaper is a SADF Staff Minute sheet memorandum addressed to Smith, dealing with an article submitted by Admiral Johnson. The writer of the memorandum felt that the political content of the article made it necessary for approval of the Minister. Below is an autograph note signed by Smith, dated 23/6/76, recommending that the article not be approved, and a further autograph note signed by P W Botha, 24/6/76 "Ek stem saam - 'n offisier behoort nie sulke artikels te skryf nie" ("I agree. An officer should not write such articles"). An interesting reflection of the degree of censorship during Botha's period both as Defence Minister and then Prime Minister.
