Signed by Cole as Governor; also signed by the Colonial Secretary; with manuscript insertions, authorising the disbursement of £300-3-21/4 to the Government Architect and Assistant Civil Engineer. The sum was intended to cover 'the amount of unfixed contingent expenses incurred in his department during the months of September and October last,...' The Warrant was in all probability printed on the Government Press in Cape Town. Folio, one leaf, print and manuscript one side only. Light dusting, edges slightly frayed. Cole was Governor of the Cape from 1828 - 1833, successor to Lord Charles Somerset. Cole was charged with the onorous responsibility of increasing colonial revenue to meet expenditure. During his period of office, he was responsible for the building of many new roads, a conscious policy designed to stimulate the local economy but which drew censure from the British Government, predictably on the grounds that it meant laying out money. One of his first initiatives was that of authorising the construction of a pass over the Hottentots Holland Mountains, designed to stimulate the colonial economy and to give farmers east of the range greater access to the Cape Town market. We would like to speculate that the authorisation in this warrant pertains to some road-building activity which Cole sponsored. (Dictionary of South African biography, Vol. III, page 164).
