Collection of Three Original Photographs of Stanford University's Inner Quad, c. 1899

A collection of three original black-and-white photographs of Stanford University's Inner Quad. Beautiful ambiance to each photo with misty overcast lighting and water covering the pavement of the courtyard from a recent rain. Each photo is mounted on medium or dark gray matboard. No date, circa 1899. The following are measurements for each pair of photo and mat, numbered 1-3. Photo 1: 4 1/2" x 3"; Matboard 1: 7" x 5." Photo 2: 4 1/2" x 2 3/4"; Matboard 2: 7 1/4" x 4 3/4." Photo 3: 3" x 3"; Matboard 3: 5" x 5 1/2." Handwriting in pencil on back reads, "Stanford 1899." Each photo and matboard are virtually pristine and intact except for slight age toning. Fine copies. A collection of three photographs showing the Inner Quad of Stanford University with its constituent "oases" (planters with palm trees and other desert plants), arcades, and one of the main arched entrances to the courtyard. Photo 1 shows an angled view of the arched entrance, the covered walkways, a few of planters, and a sky with slight sepia tones. Photo 2 shows a straight-shot view of what appears to be the same archway in Photo 1 and planters pictured on either side. Photo 3 was taken from under the arcade with one of its arches framing a view of the rain-covered courtyard with a planter at center. A sense of silence fills each scene as there are no people pictured in the courtyard. If the date of the photo is correct, a possible reason for this is that the Inner Quad had not yet been completed. The Inner Quad was completed the same year as the university's opening in 1891. The Quad, with its sandstone walls and red tiled roofs, among other elements, is an excellent showcase of Stanford University's signature architectural style inspired by Romanesque and Mission Revival architecture. The overall campus of Stanford University and its Main Quad (comprising the Inner and Outer Quads) were designed by landscape architect Frank Law Olmsted (1822-1903), a landscape architect who had co-designed New York's Central Park with Calvert Vaux; Calvin A. Coolidge (1858-1936), an architect who was a partner of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge; and Leland Stanford (1824-1893), the founder of the university who had it built in memory of his only child, Leland Stanford, Jr. (1868-1884).. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
