An extensive letter, some 52 lines, in which Colvin gives his impressions of and reactions to Bayfield's paper on prosody which he had been sent. He analyses iambic versus trochaic metric patterns, comparing Bayfield's stance with that of Saintsbury and in general being somehwat critical of Bayfield's theories. Matthew Albert Bayfield (17 June 1852 in Kings Norton, Worcestershire – 2 August 1922 in Hertford) was an English classical scholar, author, headmaster, clergyman and spiritualist. Bayfield is best known for his commentaries on classical Greek texts as well his writing on the subject of poetry. Sir Sidney Colvin (18 June 1845 – 11 May 1927) was an English curator and literary and art critic, part of the illustrious Anglo-Indian Colvin family. He is primarily remembered for his friendship with Robert Louis Stevenson.
