Since the Shoal is relatively shallow and lies parallel to the coast, it is very exposed to the impact of storm seas. . . . However, on the more sheltered inside (landward) dropoff, growth of sponges, corals, gorgonians and seaweeds is prolific, and the diversity of fish and invertebrate life is good."
