Red 3/4 leather binding with brown paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering on spine. Four raised bands. 5 1/4" x 7 1/4." 312 pages, complete. Ten plates, complete. All of the plates are in black-and-white except for one which is accented by orange to convey the color of the flames. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Pages slightly age-toned. Covers have some edge wear. A Very Good copy. An in-depth account of the Great Boston Fire of 1872. The fire burned for about twelve hours on November 9 and 10, 1872 and destroyed much of Boston's downtown financial district. At least thirty people were killed; among them, twelve firefighters. The fire is still one of the costliest fires in American history in terms of property damage. Some experts have concluded that the fire started in a warehouse at the corner of Kingston and Summer Streets. The fire spread rapidly due to the wooden frames of the buildings (although many had a brick facade), the lack of building codes, and an outdated water infrastructure. This book includes topics such as statistics and figures, trades that were affected, contributions of the military and police, the aftermath, and ensuing legislation.
