"Britain's most popular living painter" was the description of Beryl Cook in a recent BBC broadcast.In the six years since her first one man show in Plymouth, her fame has spread not just in this country bit throughout the world: although much of her subject matter is British her humour has universal appeal,and her work has been reproduced and relished in countries as far apart as Jamaica,South Africa and the USSR.Through books and magazines,television features and greetings cards her brightly clad,well-rounded figures have become familiar to us all; and once we have seen them,the real world never looks quite the same again.
