Three-quarter dark brown leather; gilt lettering, gilt trim/decorations; five raised bands on spine, six compartments. Illustrated, plates including frontispieces. All edges gilt. Vol. I: 286 pages. Vol. II: 352 pages. Condition: Both volumes in need of rebinding/re-backing. Overall current condition of bindings: Expected dry leather, cracks, chips, brittleness, effects of humidity, handling, some insect infestation, and age wear/toning. Pieces of binding missing (mostly spine and corner leather pieces). Shelf wear, chips, rubbing, and scattered soiling. Corners showing. Turn-ins chipped, cracked. Looks like hinges and endpapers were replaced at one time. A few tears to preliminaries, mostly to free endpapers, blank pages, and tissue overlays. Vol. I: Joints cracked, backing lifting. Vol. II: Joints cracked, rear cover and endpaper/blank separated from text block. Former owner names penciled on preliminaries (circa. 1891). Internally: Overall Very Good, scattered foxing, old damp spots, periodic tears, some old insect stains. Text very readable, illustrations in very good condition. Boards can be rebound/re-backed with excellent results. The volumes can look magnificent: Set features heavy paper, stunning illustrations (in text illustrations, full page illustrations, and plates), headpieces, etc. Very scarce antiquarian set - over 130 years old. Books cover French and German art, with spectacular, beautiful illustrations. Extensive discussions about the artists and artwork.
