During this period of his life he developed an affinity with, and a respect for, such men and his interest in all things military continued throughout his life.He was educated in twelve army garrison schools before completing his education at Durban High School,South Africa,in 1944.After three years service in the RAF he joined the Civil Service spending over forty years with the Department of Education and the University Grants Committee. Walking regularly through St Brannock's Churchyard,he began to notice the names of a significant number of men commemorated on the gravestones who had died whilst serving in the Great War.The names conjured up visions of the men in uniform he had known in his childhood and he felt that he needed to know more about who they were and how and where they died.In seeking out this information he discovered that a considerable number of other men from Braunton had also given their lives for their country. So many,in fact that he decided that their sacrifice should go on record and so the idea of writing this book was born.
