'In The Eye Of The Storm' is a unique record of leadership and an exceptional memoir of the personal struggle of being in a position of high command at a crucial moment in history. It also reminds us that although 'Desert Storm' was a brief campaign as it was, like every other war,not without its humour as well as its miscalculations and, above all,its very human side. Great Britian had not sent an armoured formation of such size and complexity to war since 1945.Patrick Cordingley explains how the difficulties of sustaining such a large force in unfamiliar terrain were overcome, how they trained and how they coped with the strain of waiting for the signal to attack and the near-certainty that chemical weapons would be used.Writing vividly about the stark realities of the ground war,the author describes the frightening, exhilarating and exhausting struggle as his troops covered an incredible distance in record time, using high-tech weaponry that had never been used in warfare before.Although essentially a personal story,he also raises some important new questions about the conduct of the war, about the gap between politics and practicality and above all, betrween reported 'fact' and reality. Major General Patrick Anthony John Cordingley,DSO,OBE,FRGS,(born 6 October 1944) is now a retired (2000) British Army officer who was given command of the 7th Armoured Brigade,a formation of the army in 1988 and,in 1991,led the brigade during the first Gulf War. The brigade is also known as the "Desert Rats", a nickname formerly held by the 7th Armoured Division of which the brigade formed a part of during WW2 until late 1941.The application of armoured warfare depends on the use of tanks and related vehicles used by other supporting arms such as infantry fighting vehicles,self-propelled artillery, and other combat vehicles,as well as mounted combat engineers and other support units. He commanded the 2nd Division from 1995 to 1996 and was Senior British Loan Services Officer to Oman in 1996,before retiring in 2000. Educated at Sherbourne School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (Intake 35),where he was Senior Under-Officer of Waterloo Company.Commissioned into the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards in June 1965. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the minor faults described preventing a slightly higher grading. An uncommon example SIGNED.
