One of 700 copies printed. Four-volume set, complete. Original publisher's brown leather binding backed with beige cloth. Vol. IV is also backed with beige cloth but has brown paper boards. 8 1/4" x 11 3/4." Some of pages have "John Henry Nash" watermark. Vol. I: "A to K, Inclusive"; 337 pages (Pages 1-337), complete. Vol. II: "L to Z, Inclusive"; 366 pages (Pages 339-704), complete. Vol. III: "Title and Subject Index" and "Chronological Index"; 121 pages (Pages 705-825), complete. Vol. IV: 100 pages (Pages 827-926), complete. Vol. IV differs a bit from the other volumes that it was edited only by Robert Granniss Cowan, has no "Nash" watermarks on the pages, and was published in 1964 by the Torrez Press in Los Angeles. No wear to any of the volumes, but there is a small spot on the front cover of Vol. IV. Former ownership notations in pencil written in margins of pages, not affecting text. Pages are otherwise clean and intact. Binding is tight. In 1916 Robert Ernest Cowan published his 'Bibliography of a History of California and the Pacific West, 1510-1906.' This has long been out of print and is rated a rare collector's item. During the intervening twenty-four years Mr. Cowan has amassed such a wealth of material on the subject of California alone, it was necessary to omit everything dealing with the Pacific Coast, outside of the state. The acknowledged authority on Californiana, Mr. Cowan's work is of inestimable value and will be the source book for those who follow him.
