He contributed many articles to Harper's Magazine and became its editor in the 1860s. Curtis also wrote Washington Irving: A Sketch (1891) and Essays from the Easy Chair (1893) which is a collection of essays he wrote under Harper's Magazine for "The Easy Chair" column. Curtis was also an abolitionist, education and civil service reformer, and an acquaintance of many literary and political greats such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ulysses S.
