Book presents extremely well for it's age and period,and is an attractive,affordable example.
Doyle's debut novel and Sherlock Holmes's debut too.
As a doctor at Southsea (Hampshire) for eight years (1882-90) with some intervals as a ship's doctor,he supplemented his incomes by writing short stories,published anonymously in a variety of magazines.'A Study in Scarlet' (1887) was accepted by Ward Lock for £25 and published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual'.
The central character was Sherlock Holmes,based on one of Doyle's teachers,a Dr. Joseph Bell.The story aroused no particular interest in England but the editor of of the American 'Lippincott's Magazine' found it more promising and his representative in London commissioned more work. The result was 'The Sign of the Four',which appeared in 'Lippincott's magazine' in February 1890.In the same year it was published in London but as 'The Sign of Four'.Both novels are not among Doyle's best work - he preferred the historical novel - but his character,Sherlock Holmes,caught the imagination of the public and Newnes (UK) asked for Sherlock Holmes stories for his 'Strand Magazine.The first one appeared in July 1891.
