John Evelyn (1620-1706) was a notable English scholar, connoisseur, bibliophile, artist, and horticulturist whose diaries provide an in-depth look at 17th-century life in England. Evelyn documented most of his life and wrote about significant historical events of the time, his ideas of social, political, economic progress, scientific and technological advancements, and historical figures such as King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. Evelyn was especially well-versed in horticulture and wrote Sylva, or a Discourse of Forest-Trees (1664), in which he promoted afforestation after witnessing the decimation of trees for use by the English navy and various industries.
