Spine with raised bands in six compartments, blind-tooled and lettered on two, Extremities rubbed, very minor dampstaining to upper margin of early leaves. Otherwise in very good condition, plates are clean and crisp., 4to, P. 1 ff., title, 2-212 pp., 1 ff., With a handsome title page decorated with an elaborate floral border, beautiful woodcut headpieces, and 23 decorative wood engraved plates depicting various scenes from Shah-nameh.

The Shah-nameh is considered the national epic of Persian-speakers and the Iranian world. It was written over the span of 35 years by Hakim Abu’l-Qasim Firdawsi Tusi (known commonly as Ferdowsi), as a celebration of the Persian Empire before the coming of the Arabs and Islam, beginning 7,000 years ago. He based his masterpiece on other historical works available to him at the time (c. 1000 A.D.).
