Pages are very clean and intact except for light foxing and the occasional small mark. Covers are very clean and intact overall. Leather portions of covers have some rubbing and edge wear. Front outer joint of Vol. II is cracked but still strong and holding. Binding is tight. Very Good copies. English translation of Firishta's famous court memoirs and history of India as well as other histories of the Deccan sultanates and Mughal Empire by different writers of the time. Firishta (also, Ferishta or Fereste; c. 1560 or 1570-c. 1620) was a Persian historian. Earlier in his career, Firishta had served as captain of the guards under King Murtaza Nizam Shah I, Sultan of Ahmadnagar, but had to flee when, in 1587, Murtaza was assassinated by his own son, Prince Hussain Nazim Shah I. Firishta's life was spared on account of them being former friends. Firishta fled to the Sultanate of Bijapur in 1589 where he served under King Ibrahim Adil II, who eventually requested that Firishta write a general history of India with an emphasis on the Deccan sultanates. This work by Firishta comprises most of Vol. I. Vol. I begins with the Muslim conquests and concludes with the capture and execution of Shah Jahan and the early years of Aurangzeb's reign. Page 400 onward in Vol. I was written by another author. (Firishta also consulted other sources when he wrote his historical account.) Vol. II includes works by other authors and continues with the reign of Aurangzeb and concludes with historical events in 1780. Translated and annotated by Jonathan Scott (1754-1829), an English orientalist, secretary and translator to Governor-General of Bengal Warren Hastings, and a member of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal..
