8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is the original manuscript 5 year diary of a young Boston area woman named Grace W. Ingalls. Grace, who works in Dr. Weston's office, is a bright, cheerful and busy girl, one of eight or nine in 'the gang' who go to movies, play cards, bowling, near daily lunches and share an uncommonly cheerful life considering the diary details the years 1936 through 1940, the Depression had not released its grip on America's economy and the dark clouds over Europe are in the papers almost daily. Historians and collectors of the era will delight in Grace's diary as a relic of pre-War Boston. Here are some snippets and points of interest: 'Howard got a raise to $24.23' [almost $1000 in today's money]; 1934 Jan 30: 'President's Birthday party - all over country - balls to benefit of infantile paralysis victims'; flock of Evening Grosbeaks here for several days'; 'Norma Burnham [dies of Cancer one and a half years old] was brought home. Their bird died 15 minutes after she was brought in the house.'; 'heard Rabbi Israel from Baltimore speak at the Cong Church on 'The Art of Living Together'…. beautiful speaker….' Grace also does a fine job naming her contacts and visitors and noting milestones: Marty Alden, the Eastmans, Lita Elliot [co-worker at the office], Miss Leadbetter, Marjorie Lovell, Dr. Weston, the Marshalls, Ruth Brown, Dorothy Muriels, Bogdens, Mattie Moore, Carl Richards, Norma Burnham, Bill Whittemore, Donald Winslow Thurston and many, many more. Places of interest and places she visits read like a tour of Boston proper and include: Wellesley, bus from Salem, Pittsfield, Boston City Club, Mrs. Jack Gardener's Museum [Isabella Stewart Gardner], Dorchester, bowling at Fenway Alleys++++ There are a number of pieces of ephemera the best being a 4 x 6 in. piece of paper with a hand drawn cartoon of Grace and the gang tobogganing drawn by Pres Sweetsey [?]. The large 7 x 5 inch book's leather cover is in rough shape having a strip removed from the spine and other rubbing but otherwise overall G+.. Book Condition: Good.
