US,8vo HB,no dw/dj - as issued?,1st edn thus. [Size approx 8.1/4" tall x 6" wide.] NFINE.A brown+white Anne Anderson-esque,languid Art Nouveau artwork styled pictorial illustrated pasted-in bookplate with name, date+location,to front pastedown.(Artwork non-credited,but artist's initials D.E.W.) Another, possibly earlier, previous owner's blue/black ink inscrptn: different name+location,to centre of top edge of blank between the ffe and the half title-page.The ffe appears to have had another tipped-in bookplate removed,as there is some horizontal 'ghost' residue of glue to same, and some partial loss to front endpaper illustration to assumed foot of said bookplate.Top edge may have been gilt once, but appears now as either a dark colour,or ageing; both fore and lower edges aged/tanned and deckled (uncut and untrimmed); contents bright, tight, solid and sound and clean, virtually foxing or spotting free - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips. Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, original, variant plain blue cloth boards, with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters within a landscape 1/10" wide blocked, bordered (approx 2" tall x 5.1/2" wide) panel to top quarter of upper board, the blocked border continuing to the other three quarters of same boards.[The lettering reads as DREAM DAYS KENNETH GRAHAME ILLVSTRATED BY MAXFIELD PARRISH,within the panel.] The similar, blocked gilt letters to the darkened spine/backstrip are dulled, oxidised and are just discernible, with the orange+white illustrated endpapers generally bright and clean, apart from aforementioned remarks to endpapers. Both head+foot of spine/backstrip minisculely bumped with reciprocal creasing and some light fading to creases.US,8vo HB,no dw/dj - as issued(?),1-227pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,8 chapters,8 b/w photogravures and 6 b/w line illustration chapter tail-pieces,to 6 of 8 chapters excepting,'It's Walls Were As Jasper' and 'A Saga of the Seas' - all illustrations by Maxfield Parrish.Plus [unpaginated],blank,half-title page, glassine tissue guard to b/w photogravure illustrated frntis,b/w photogravure illustrated title page and 8 chapter title separator pages. No publisher's adverts present. Described hard, but fairly and an honest appraisal, with noted defects reflected in book's price.A really collectable, uncommon,Maxfield Parrish illustrated issue/edn,in an exceptional condition and state of preservation, given the book's age. An early US illustrated,1st edition thus, the UK 1st edition published in 1898,by John Lane: The Bodley Head, originally being without illustrations, this therefore, one of the first Maxfield Parrish's US illustrated editions,in 1902.A collection of children's fiction and reminiscences of childhood, from Scottish author Kenneth Grahame (1859- 1932),whose best known work was 'The Wind in the Willows',regarded by many as a children's literary classic.Written as a companion volume to the 1895 collection 'The Golden Age',some of its selections feature the same family of five children.Six selections in the book have been previously published in contemporary periodicals of the day; namely in the 'Yellow Book',the 'New Review',and in 'Scribner's Magazine' in the United States. The book is probably best known for the inclusion of Grahame's classic story 'The Reluctant Dragon'.
