UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG-/GOOD.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj. Glossy, colour pictorial artwork by 'barbosa' illustrated front panel and spine/backstrip of dw/dj with white letters with neglgible shelf-wear to lower edges - a closed, folded diagonal crease to lower rear corner along with a small closed tear slightly further along towards foot of spine, top edges rubbed with reciprocal chipping to head of spine/ backstrip and some minor loss to front edge - a jagged triangular shape leaving the partial letters of L,T of first word, with 'EAT' entirely missing and slightly removing top of letter 'M' in armchair of the title,beneath.Top+fore-edges lightly aged/toned with very minimal signs of foxing/spotting; contents generally bright, clean, tight and solid - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - could appear unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's sharp-cornered,original maroon cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip but with the following faults/detractions; water stains which have bleached the colour on both front+ rear lower edges and foot of spine too,a small darker splash stain to top, front edge, along with pushing to head of spine/ backstrip causing a small split/tear and reciprocal fraying to rear gutter's top and edge of rear board's top edge in the same vicinity.Described hard but fairly and honestly, text body+contents sound, board's exteriors and the dw/dj only with faults.Still an acceptable copy of an uncommon title even with the dw/dj in this state/grade - kept for completeness.UK, Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,v-xxvpp+1-194pp [paginated] includes a foreword by P. G. Wodehouse, author's acknowledgements, separate contents+illustrations lists/ tables,an introduction, over 60 clubs' histories and associated membership, subscriptions, anecdotes, wine cellars, cuisine and facilities etc.,accompanied with 4 colour photographs - fntis included - of interiors of named clubs, and 16 b/w illustrations by Geoffrey S. Fletcher in 2 blocks of 8pp apiece, between pp38/9 and pp118/19 respectively.Plus [unpaginated] half-title,colour photographic frntis, title page and to the rear of the book,4pp blanks. A walk along London's Pall Mall,up St James's and into Picadilly takes the idle stroller into a world of dignified, stone buildings, plush dark-toned interiors, and magnificent, glittering chandeliers. This is London's Clubland,a land peculiarly and unmistakably British, the land of leather armchairs. Charles Graves, one of the outstanding social historians of today, now directs his attention to London's Clubland.Out of the hundreds of clubs in existence he has made a representative selection of over sixty, starting ith White's,formed in 1693,and continuing to the present day (then 1963) and the Clermont founded in 1962.With each club he describes its history, gives up-to-date information (again, then 1963) on conditions of membership, subscritptions, wine cellars, cuisine and facilities, and presents a host of hilarious anecdotes about members past and present.
