Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet and scholar who is perhaps best-known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. It was an immediate success upon its initial publication in 1751 among critics and the general public alike. Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is a rumination upon death and remembrance. In the poem, an unnamed narrator commemorates the "obscure," the country poor, who are buried in what many scholars have concluded is the churchyard of Church of St. Giles, Stoke Poges. However, the narrator (whom many scholars believe is a reflection of Gray) laments that these people, through forces outside of their control, are largely forgotten and begins to ponder if he will be remembered after he passes.. Illustr.: Cameron, W. R.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
