The Boer War (1899-1902) was fought between Great Britain and the Boer states of the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic) and the Orange Free State. As with any war, the circumstances under which the Boer War were complex, but a main factor in the war's outbreak was the discovery of gold and diamonds in the Boer states. Many civilians were affected including black Africans who were forced into British concentration camps during the conflict. Since numerous people who were not part of British and Boer forces were involved in the war, many scholars today refer to the Boer War as the South African War. This pamphlet includes military correspondence and reports by Earl Frederick Roberts (1832-1914) and military officers Redvers Buller (1839-1908), Charles Warren (1840-1927), Henry Hildyard (1846-1916), Francis Clery (1838-1926), Edward Woodgate (1845-1900), Alexander Thorneycroft (1859-1931), Neville Lyttelton (1845-1931), Geoffrey Barton (1844-1922), and Henry Blagrove (1854-1925).
