Original blank stationery on beige paper. Letterhead features a small black and white illustration of the hotel situated within a scenic landscape surrounded by forests and lakes. The letterhead reads, "Gt. Southern Hotel, Lakes of Killarney." No date, circa 1900-1909 (blank fill-in date of "190_"). Location is Killarney, Ireland. The Lakes of Killarney as they are known today are located in Killarney National Park and comprise Lough Leane, Muckross Lake (Middle Lake), and Upper Lake. 10" x 8 1/4." Stationery is very clean and intact overall. Paper is folded in half vertically and has some foxing. The Great Southern Hotel was built in 1854 upon the commission of the Great Southern and Western Railway Company (GS&WR). 1854 was the same year the GS&WR completed the first railway line between Dublin and Killarney, and the company sought to build a prestigious hotel outside of Dublin. GS&WR wanted to build its hotel within an estate owned by Valentine Browne, 4th Earl of Kenmare (1825-1905), and they struck a deal which granted the Browne family free travel on all of GS&WR's rail lines and GS&WR permission to take over the land, including the Browne's beautiful gardens. The Great Southern Hotel was designed by architect Frederick Darley who is quoted as saying that he wanted to build a hotel that would "take the visitor's breath away." The town of Killarney became involved in the Irish War of Independence, and at one point, the Great Southern Hotel was taken over by the British Army to be used as an office and barracks to protect a nearby railway station. The Great Southern Hotel changed its name a couple more times to become The Malton, and eventually, The Great Southern Killarney, the name by which it goes by today. Over its years, many notable figures and celebrities visited The Great Southern Hotel, and it remains a popular tourist destination to this day.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
