Green, Esther (compiler) : African Tribal Sculpture. A bibliography based principally on works available in South African libraries

(Cape Town: University of Cape Town School of Librarianship, 1967)

225 x 164 mm; saddle-stitched printed wrappers; pp. (iv) + ix + (i) + 64. Contains 302 entries, and an index. Wrappers a little sunned. Very good condition. 'The bibliography is intended to cover African primitive or tribal sculpture, as distinct from the more modern art, which does not spring from the tribal background, or fulfill a tribal function. Primitive art has been defined as "that branch of cultural and social anthropology which is most concerned with man's aesthetic impulses." Douglas Fraser distinguishes primitive art from (a) lesser arts, usually called crafts, (b) subordinate art of high cultures usually called folk art, and (c) the products of advanced civilisations such as our own. He calls it "the high art of low cultures." This work therefore excludes crafts, drawings, paintings and "modern sculpture". The area treated is Africa, or those parts of Africa in which tribal sculpture is found. South Africa it will be noted is not included as the art there does not fall within the scope of the bibliography.' - From the compiler's Preface.
