A speech originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on January 25, 1848 by James S. Green (1817-1870), an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He served as a U.S. Representative from Missouri from 1847-1851, a U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1857-1861, and U.S. Minister to New Granada from 1853-1854. He was a Democrat. In this speech, Green defends President James K. Polk amid accusations of the president commencing the war unnecessarily and unconstitutionally. Green argues that the war was commenced in a necessary and Constitutional manner and still is necessary and Constitutional. Among his arguments justifying the war is that the U.S. needed to protect Texas following its annexation, Mexico withdrew its diplomat from negotiations, and that the U.S. had a fundamental obligation to not abandon Texas. He compares the actions of the U.S. in the Mexican-American War to the U.S. invasion into Canada in the War of 1812. Green states, "[N]o man now dare, in the face of the public, declare that act [allowing the invasion into Canada] unconstitutional, without at once incurring the odium attached to the Federalists of 1812." He also argues, "The conquest of Mexico has been a consequence or incident, not the object of the war.". Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
