Mr Green's new collection of stories, the third in his career (then 1967),is subtitled 'Comedies of the Sexual Life' - a phrase not to be interpreted narrowly.Their versatility is remarkable. The tone may be grotesque,or ironic, or near-tragic; the characters are drawn from both sexes, all ages and several nationalities; the settings range from the South of France to an English preparatory school,to a Caribbean island,to a nineteenth-century mid-European market town. The longer stories, especially the superb title piece, strike astonishingly deep within their limited compass; the short ones are equally memorable for their concentration and wit. Underlying all of them, even the most ferocious, is a compassionate concern for the men and women who are the actors in the 'comedies'.
