Anne Wharton (nee) Lee,born 1659, posthumously to Sir John Danvers and Anne Danvers who died after childbirth; married Thomas Wharton (1648-1715),a sportsman and politician in 1673,and she d.1685,was a poet and verse dramatist.She is mainly rememberd for her verse drama 'Love's Martyr; or,Witt above Crowns',and for a number of lyrical poems and biblical paraphrases.Most of her work was unpublished during her own lifetime. Particularly her 'Elegie on Charles Earle of Rochester' (‘Insatiate graue yeild back thy mighty Treasure’) was first published here in this work by Greer and Hastings. Several of her other works also appear here,published for the first time,within this edn. A modern critical edition of 34 known works by Anne Wharton was published in 1997,but at least eleven other poems have been discovered in manuscript since then. Germaine Greer is an Australian writer and public intellectual,regarded as one of the major voices of the radical feminist movement in the latter half of the 20th century. Specializing in English and women's literature,she has held academic positions in England at the University of Warwick and Newnham College,Cambridge,and in the United States at the University of Tulsa.Based in the United Kingdom since 1964,she has divided her time since the 1990s between Queensland,Australia,and her home in Essex, England.Her ideas have created controversy ever since her first book,'The Female Eunuch' (1970),which made her a household name.
