(Cape Town: South African Library, 1978)

South African Library Reprint Series 6. 4to; blue papered boards; pp. (viii) + (ii) + 154 + 4. Slight bump to top edge of lower board; boards a little sunned. Very good condition. Facsimile of the original edition, with a new introduction. "The South African commercial advertiser ran for eighteen numbers until 10 May 1824 when its policy of including law reports which incidentally showed the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset and his colonial administration in a bad light, led to a clash between Somerset and the proprietor. Before issue number 18 was published, the Fiscal at the Cape insisted on first approving the proof-sheets of the newspaper before allowing publication. Although the proofs were passed by him and number 18 was issued, a postscript was added to it by Greig, Fairbairn and Pringle which announced that they would no longer publish the newspaper while subject to such controls, and they would appeal to the British Government for a directive. When the publishers announced they were about to issue Facts connected with the stopping of the press and the censorship of the Fiscal, the Fiscal responded by serving them with a warrant to seal the printing press. Nevertheless, Greig still printed the Facts using standing type, since the type itself was not specifically mentioned in the warrant, only the press." - from the Introduction.
