Contemporary brown full leather binding with gilt lettering on spine. Beautiful book design on front and back covers which have decorative "blocks" of dark brown leather and medium brown suede. Gilt decorations on front and back covers and spine. Four raised bands. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Pages are lined. Various dates, circa 1885-1890. 10" x 14." Circa 171 pages (record-keeping appears to stop at Page 171). The remainder of the book after Page 171 is blank. There are 453 numbered pages in total (page numbers are pre-stamped in the upper corners of the fore-edge). Additional alphabetical index in front with lettered tabs. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning, the occasional mark, and slight foxing. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight rubbing and light to moderate wear at extremities. Binding is tight. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. An original account book kept by John T. Griffith. The first 110 pages or so relate to the collection of personal property tax in Sacramento County from various citizens, including A. J. Bump and Wm. Land. The latter part of the account book concerns the administration of the land grants in Northern California counties. Individual land grants are listed in this section. Much of the information contained herein consists of listed names, brief notations, and numerical figures. The front alphabetical index lists citizens, from whom tax was collected, by last name with the corresponding page number (or numbers) by their name. For example, an entry under "AB" in the index reads, "Beckley, P. R.; 86," which means P. R. Beckley's record is on Page 86. However, records for at least one individual ("N. J. Toll") appear on pages outside of the listed corresponding page numbers. Also, not all residents who have records may be listed in the index. Among the other residents listed in the index are E. C.
